Joss Martinez (She/Her/Hers),
intern counsellor
Joss is an intern counsellor pursuing a master’s degree in counselling psychology from Yorkville university. She has been working in the mental health and social services field for the past four years as a Family Support Specialist helping individuals to achieve balance in different areas of their lives. She believes that everybody has the capacity to heal, but many of us don’t know how. Her goal is to create a welcoming, safe space for individuals to bring their burdens and to provide an opportunity to explore paths forward. She believes that every individual is an expert in their own life, and it is with this foundation that she works collaboratively with her clients to move towards healing and empowerment.

Joss has always been passionate about helping others. Since her early youth, she has been part of support groups helping members of various communities, including members of disadvantaged groups. Her life experiences and the different challenges she has faced as an immigrant moving to a new country by herself and adapting to a new culture have inspired her to pursue a career as a counsellor. She enjoys working with different modalities to achieve well-being, such as reiki, energy healing, meditation, and sound therapy. She uses these tools to support the therapeutic process when appropriate.
She works with individuals who are facing a range of issues such as depression, anxiety, difficulty establishing or maintaining healthy relationships, symptoms resulting from past trauma, cultural adaptation, migration, and settlement. She has worked with individuals of different ages, genders, and cultures. These diverse experiences allow her to offer a tailored approach that respects and reflects the individual’s unique identity.
She believes that all our social identities interact and contribute to our life experiences, and by understanding how we respond to those experiences, we can recognize how the circumstances and past experiences have shaped us. This allows us to find more appropriate responses in times of struggle.
She works from a person-centred framework which means that she uses different theoretical orientations to develop a therapeutic style for each client. Solution Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Narrative Therapy are just some of the therapeutic modalities that we can explore while working together.
